Context: Burkina Faso, once called Upper Volta, was colonized by France and kept under control long after “independence” in 1960.. Through the CFA franc, France controlled its currency, economy, and future. Through foreign mining contracts, it looted, leaving the people in poverty. Through military operations, it claimed to fight extremists, while securing French interests. But the people saw through the illusion. In 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, just 34 years old, rose from the army ranks. He overthrew the French-backed regime. He expelled foreign troops, banned french propaganda, and called for Pan-African unity with Mali and Niger. No suit. No speechwriters. Just a man speaking truth. “We are not enemies with the French people, it is the policy of those who run France which poses a problem in Africa… We must agree to look at each other as equals.” This is not just a coup.
